>> and author ed klein says that bill clinton could steal barack obama's thunder at the democratic national convention. >> ladies and gentlemen, governor mike huckabee. [applaus [applause]. >> mike: hello everybody, thank you. thank you very much, great crowd here today in new york. and welcome to huckabee from the fox news studios in new york city. having just returned from the republican national convention in tampa i've got some thoughts, for one thing, that magic moment with clint eastwood, pretty spectacular, really. we've been trying to get president obama on this show for years, he's turned us down every time. now i know it's really easy, and we just bring the chair out. so (applause) >> maybe if i have the chair,

he will magically appear. just like harry reid's imagery friends tend to appear from time to time. [applause] >> we really didn't miss losing that first night at the convention canceled because of the possibility of bad weather. oh, it was a tough, but appropriate call given the weather forecast. and by the way, the three big networks were only going to cover one hour each night skraen way. and so, had there been a monday session, viewers without cable would have likely been stuck watching hawaii 5-0 reruns, so just as well the event was scheduled. and fact is, i think going forward the two parties ought to hold a two night convention, and on each night have two hours to put on their shows. and they are shows. gone are the days of yesteryear when a political convention actually determined the nominee and gave the viewers some suspense and drama. and in the highly scripted and choreographed world of today's television-driven political

convention, several days of expensive lodging and meals and gulag-like security and artfully crafted moments, well, it might just not be necessary. let's just be honest and call it what it is, it's a tv show and since that's what it is. why don't we condense it to two nights, two hours per night. at the end of each night, televised it and bring on bands for an hour's worth of big time entertainment for the delegatesment it'd save time, save money and the results would be the same. now, there was one element of surprise at that g.o.p. convention, and it was positive overall with no real person attacks by the president and was that planned? i'm not sure. i think it was just a matter of believing that it wasn't necessary to denigrate president obama as a person. all we've got to do is remind voters we've wasted three and a half years hoping for change and getting played at chumps. >> i had something at the

hands of debby wasserman schultz. >> the only hitch was the awful noise coming from the hotel room next to mine, turns out debby wasserman schultz practicing her speech for the democratic national convention in charlotte next week, bless her heart. (laughter) >> you know-- (applause) >> i don't think she has much of a sense of humor. you know. >> i think mike huckabee's comment was an example of how he isn't familiar with the voice of a strong woman. >> oh, really? >> oh. >> can i let you in on a little secret. it's obviously true she has never met janet huckabee, my wife of 38 years. and you know, i thought it was a pretty tame joke and a show after all. even chris christie

disappointed some people because he spoke from the podium instead of throwing it at the audience. [applause] >> we're demanding that our leaders stop tearing each other down and work together to take action on the big things facing america. >> and marco rubio, he delivered one of the most powerful speeches at this or any other conventions i've attended, pulled his punches on the president at least in a personal way. >> let me be clear, our problem with president obama is not that he's a bad person. by all accounts he's a good husband and a good father, thanks to lots of practice, a good golfer. our problem is not that he's a bad person. our problem is that he's bad president. >> and the g.o.p. presidential nominee, mitt romney made sure that his differences with the president

could have been described by michael korleone. >> and it's not personal, it's strictly business. >> i wish president obama had succeeded because i want america to succeed. (cheers) >> that's right. it was not personal all week long, it was just business. and now, were the republicans being artificially nice? i doubt that. i can tell you that the republicans can be just as mean as democrats at times. but it wouldn't accomplish a thing at this convention, the people in the building are already true believers and the ones watching at home are probably living the realities of an obama presidency, they don't have to be reminded of broken promises, oversold dreams and policies that are opposite to common sense. next week, the democrats will gather in charlotte and we're anxious to see if they're going to try to convince us, we really had four great years with president obama or if they'll just tell u that if

mitt romney is helected we're all going to get cancer. well, joining me from charlotte with a look back at the rnc and look ahead at the dnc, a little more serious look with fox news sunday's chris wallace. thanks for joining me today. >> well, thank you, everybody. it's a delight to be here, and i have to say having met janet huckabee, you're exactly right. debby wasserman schultz doesn't know. >> i may send janet to charlotte and let her convince debby wasserman schultz what a strong woman really looks like. and let's talk about the tone of the rnc, a lot of people were kind of surprised not the skin the bark off the trees kind of speeches, i think they were generally tame and to date sharp contrast, but did you feel there was an intentional effort to try to tone down any personal rhetoric toward the president? >> yes, i do.

i don't think it's because suddenly the republicans have become kinding and gentler, i think it was a political calculation on their part, governor. and it's basically this, that their target audience, the people they think are going to win this election for them are those people who voted for obama in 2008, but are now on the bubble. i know they even had focus groups of specifically a group of voters going on during the convention and they feel that attacking president obama, who according to the polls, person who is very popular personally, was a counterproductive way to go. that the much more effective way was more in sorrow than in anger. and really, if you had to describe it, the word disappointment. we understand that were you excited and felt good when you voted for barack obama in 2008, that you you had all of these hopes for the country, and you still like him personally, but you're disappointed. and so, that was very much their calculated tactic, going

in and i think throughout the convention. >> mike: almost like clint eastwood said, sometimes you've just got to let it go. got it let it go. >> exactly. >> mike: he may have had some of the harsher comments of the entire week. one thing that did happen, debby wasserman schultz and sand sand sandra fluke showed up and making the talk shows and next week, dnc, they'll be available to give instant analysis on the proceedings. does this matter? does it have an impact for either of the parties when they show up the at each other's conventions and try to muscle in on it. >> well, it's interesting, because, you know, you and i have been around long enough that the tradition was, when the one party was giving a convention, the other party stood down particularly the nominee for president and vice-president would take a

week off, in the new news cycle, 24/7, internet, tweet, facebook, you can't do that. you know, there's not a 24 hour news cycle, it's now a news cycle every 30 seconds. and so, we just found out that paul ryan, he won't be here in charlotte, but will be in north carolina in greenville on monday and as you say, a lot of the top people like marco rubio, and like suzanna martinez are going to be here in charlotte and responding. yeah, look, it's not going to get the millions of people who are watching the convention, it won't get that same kind of big audience, but you do get a counter argument and that's important. you can't give up a week of media. >> mike: we haven't seen the speeches that the democrats will roll out. what do you feel in anticipation will be, the message that they will bring? will it be an anti-romney message or will they try to sell that the president's actually had a much better four years and those of us who are republicans are giving him credit? >> well, i think both.

i think, obviously, they're going to try to sell it and it's not an easy sell. a lot of arguments about the obama record, but thr he' going to try it sell it more successful and one of the lines they're using is bin laden is dead and gm is alive. there are high points that they will sell, but i think they're going to go after romney and try to counter some arguments made at the convention and i don't think because they don't see romney as a particularly personally popular person, they'll be much sharper in their criticism of romney than republicans were of obama. >> mike: there was a quote that president obama is giving time magazine and i want to read it and get a reaction to it, because it's a little bit of an interesting point of rhetoric for one thing, but also, i think the point the republicans are sitting on. this is the quote, so my expectation is that there will be popping of the blister after this election, because it will have been such a stark choice, where republicans refuse to cooperate on things i know are good for the american people, i will

continue to look for ways to do it administratively and work around congress. it appears that the president sort of has the attitude if i can't work with congress, i will just ignore them and sort of the constitutional balance of free, equal branches of government and do it anyway, and i want you to respond to that tactic of sort of saying it's their fault and how does he make that -- i know it's a long question. i'm asking you the kind that you ask me when i'm on your show. (laughter) >> but, the other part of that, how does he convince that it's all congress's fault when he's got democrats running the senate who won't let anything through anyway? >> well, in answer to your little barb there, as my father once said, sometimes the questions are more interesting than the answers, so, i take your point. and you know, i could have done without the blister popping metaphor here, but he's got to make a -- he's got to sort of answer the question, which is that you came in promising hope and change, that it was going to

be united and bipartisan, so, he's making two arguments, one, if i win and a mandate that maybe the republicans will listen this time and obviously, it's not miss fault got to be the republicans fault. secondly, if they won't. i won't say gridlock four more years, but do it administratively. he's got a find a way of giving democrats, rather, something to hang their hat on. but it's a different version of hope and change, than we heard four years ago and let me quickly say, governor, i think that's the hardest task that this president has. that last convention, when you were for or against, it was magical and i remember when he gave his successive speech, with the greek columns in denver four years ago, it was a magical and exciting moment. i think it's part of standard, president obama this week in charlotte, is not going to be measuring up to tampa last week. it will be measuring up to obama four years ago. >> mike: i think that's a

pretty big egos on the same stage. talk about if he could overshadow president clinton. >> they won't be on the same stage. president clinton will be here the at the time warner arena, convention hall. and then president obama will be at the football stadium on thursday. but, you know, i think that clinton can do a lot for obama because he can make an argument and, you know, whether you like him or don't. nobody knows this better than you, growing up with him in arkansas, he's one of the master politicians, one of the most effective people to argue any case that i've ever seen in politics and i think he will maybe do even better than president obama does, one, arguing the case why he should continue as president, but more, what's wrong with mitt romney. and you know, i think he can do that, that awfully effectively and in addition, he can speak to the white, working class voters who this president has always had a problem attracting, in a way

that barack obama can't. >> mike: chris, i've been going to political conventions for a number of years, as have you. i don't ever remember the security situation as intense as it was even in new york in 2004. and i just want your thoughts. do you expect charlotte to be that intense? >> the security here at the arena in charlotte is much smaller, but there's an important difference. i was thinking why is it so much softer here, and the reason is because joe biden and barack obama are never going to be in this arena. they're not going to show up here till thursday and they're going to show up and only be in the football stadium. so, here the at the arena where they are he' going to do business, news, with michelle obama, wednesday, as we mentioned with bill clinton, not nearly the same level of security as we're going to see on thursday at the football stadium. >> mike: will mitt romney get a bump in the polls and if so, the traditional 6, 8, 10 point bump?

>> well, there's one tracking poll out today and an indicates about a 5 point bump that he went into the convention about 2 points behind obama, and he's now about 3 points ahead. but that's only one tracking poll. you know, i don't think anybody's going to get the bounce that they used to get. remember, it's back starting in-- as recently as 2004, you'd have the out party, the party that didn't have the incumbent president would hold the convenes in july and a whole month until the incumbent party held their convention, there was time for people to listen to the arguments that one party made and for the momentum to build up. you know, with the the republicans they held that convenes ended thursday night and they're already, we're in charlotte already to start tuesday night. and bumps don't matter. where the raise is five to seven days after the democratic convention and voters heard what the republicans said in tampa and what the democrats said here

in charlotte and that's when we'll see where the race stands going into the full campaign. >> mike: chris wallace, thank you so much for joining us, i won't see you in charlotte because i don't think the welcome mat had my name on it in charlotte. >> well, come down here and take care of us. >> mike: thank you, chris wallace. mitt romney, and paul ryan, clint eastwood, who do you think had the best quotes from the republican national convention? i'll tell you my favorites when we come back. (applaus (applause) >> well, some great speeches produced a lot of headlines at last week's republican national convention, but some set out for me like this line for mitt romney's acceptance speech. >> how many times have you woken up feeling that

something special was happening in america, many of you felt that way on election day four years ago, hope and change had powerful appeal. tonight i'd ask a simple question, if you felt that excitement when you voted for barack obama, shouldn't you feel that way now that he's president obama? (applaus (applause). you know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had was the day you voted for him. >> mike: well, that's called buyers remorse, when you buy something and get it home and realize it's not exactly what i wanted, but i thought it was going to be or maybe i paid too much. in this case, it wasn't exactly what we wanted, it wasn't what we thought it was going to be and with taxes going up as they probably will under barack obama, and we know they will under obamacare, we know we paid way, way too much. [applaus

[applause]. well, florida senator marco rubio spoke eloquently about being the son of immigrants who came to this country, chasing an american dream. >> a few years ago during a speech, i noticed a bartender behind the bar at the ballroom, and i remember my father, worked many years as a bartender, he was grateful for the work he is that's not the life he wanted for us, he stood behind the bar all those years so one day i could stand in front of a podium in front of the room. >> it was a powerful speech by marco rubio, by the way one of my very favorite, i think, rising stars in the republican party and i said for a number of years, keep your eyes on this guy. what he said was what so many of us live and what we feel. he said we grew up in a time when our parents didn't have much, wished, dreamed, hoped and prayed that their kids would have a better life and for most of us, me included,

our parents lived here, and they dreamed that we would live here and most of us have been able to do that. for the first time in american history, parents are living in fear, fearful that their kids are going to live here. that's the real danger that we face in this country if we don't get some leadership and i think that's the center piece of the republican message. well, young voters overwhelmingly voted for obama in 2008. vice-presidential nominee paul ryan explained why they ought to vote for the g.o.p. ticket this time around. >> college graduates should not have to live out their 20's in their childhood bedrooms, staring up at fading obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life. (cheers) >> again, a great, great line by paul ryan. and i think the only thing that probably should have been said at the other end of that, it wasn't just that the young people are starring up at the faded obama posters, that the

parents are staring at the dirty laundry in the the hallway, my gosh, i thought we were rid of this kid. can't he get a job and move out of the house and live on his own. the two greatest day for parents, the day the kid is born and the day he's out of college and off your payroll and on somebody else's. and today they're not getting off your payroll after college. and susanna martinez describes the moment she wasn't a democrat. >> before i ran for district attorney, two republicans invited myself and my husband to lunch. we talked about issues, welfare, is it a way of life or handout. talk about the size of government, how much should it tax families and small businesses? and when we left that lunch, we got in the car, and i looked over at chuck, and

said, i'll be damned. we're republicans. (laughter) >> it was one of my favorite lines of the whole week. and you know, i could relate to that. i grew up in a household where everybody was a democrat. heck when i first ran for office i'm not sure my own family voted for me, for heaven's sake. my county, there were only seven republicans in the entire county not one of them native to the county, all of them moved from somewhere up north. there were no republicans and i worked for one when i was a teenager, pascal jones, the owner of the local radio station and gave me a job at age 14. i became a republican because what he believed rubbed off on me, the idea of individual liberties and individual responsibilities, i couldn't be square with what was behind me, but could look forward and drem the dreams and live them if i wanted to and i couldn't blame everybody else around me for my future. i had to accept responsibility for that. and i saw in him, a level of

patriotism and pride in america, that i really, really believed in. and i thought, that's what it means to be a republican, and count me among them. so, as a teenager, and not very popular decision, that's when i became a republican. finally-- >> (applause) >> i can't show my favorite speeches from the convention, without including the at least one from my own speech. >> two questions, how one's rivals can now be united is quite simple. we have barack obama to thank. it was barack obama who said, you didn't build it. translation? it doesn't belong to you. you see, i want you to think very carefully about that idea. if you didn't build it, it doesn't belong to you. think about that. the essence of american freedom is simply this, you did build it and it does belong to you. you built it because america is built by the individual

liberties of each of us. we are governed by the consent of the government. one of the greatest rights we have as americans, we can own things. we can own our homes, we can own property. we can own our businesses, and by the way, comes with that, we can own our speech. we can own our worship. we can own our time. we can own our hopes, our dreams. the government can't tell us where to live and how big a house or how small a house we have to have. the government can't control those things because the government doesn't own it, they simply make sure that it's all carefully protected so that we can have the freedom. if the government owns it, then remember, the government takes not just the ownership, but the freedom that comes behind it. and that's why if we build it, we own it. if we didn't build it, we don't own it. and we do own it, because we did build it, that's just the way it is. (applaus (applause) >> yeah, it might just be he says, that's how you do it, son. and the title of the latest book, "the amateur", the new york times best selling author joins me now, ed. >> great to be here. >> by the way, congratulations on your speech at the republican national convention. >> oh, shu. >> i love that line in which you said that you stood shoulder to shoulder with your brothers and sisters on the

questions of religious freedom. >> thank you for saying that and i believe that very sincerely, this is not a matter where people have the luxury of dividing up among the nominations, and people of faith have got to stand together because what i truly believe is an attack on all of us. when we talked before here on the show, we talked about the amazing book you did called "the amateur" the title of it based on a conversation on assertions barack obama was-- >> that's right. he's got an important role and got to get out next week and try to sell the country that he's really the kind barack oba obama. what shall we expect out of that of and does he really believe barack obama is a better choice to lead the country? >> the answer to that question in reverse order, no, he does not think he is. he in fact called obama incompetent and an amateur, among other things, that are

printable and i have been told by people inside the clinton camp that bill clinton is furiously writing his speech right now for the convention in long hand and he's getting these phone calls from the obama people, what's in your speech? what's in your speech? ands' furious that he will not, even president obama has no idea what bill clinton is going to say when he stands up in front of that convention. >> mike: so, bill clinton will be the clint eastwood at the democrat national convention. >> that's right. >> mike: we won't know. or maybe i should say this, maybe he will be the nancy pelosi. we won't know what is in the speech until we hear the speech. maybe that way, too. >> yes. >> mike: and people question, where do you get this stuff? where do you get the stuff? >> i wrote a book about hillary several years ago and developed a number of sources close to the hillary group, inner circle and i continued as a reporter to keep my

contacts with the sources. so, they and i talk off the record virtually every day. and i get this information about what bill is up to. and you know, why is hillary not going to be at the convention? i asked that question. hillary is going to be in russia. you can't get any further away from the convention than that. >> mike: probably not. that's probably about as far away. >> so i asked why and i was told that number one, she wants to be above the frey, but more importantly, she doesn't want to be associated with this particular campaign because she personally believes privately that things are going down in flames. >> mike: specifically two departments don't get involved politically, the department of state and the department of defense. and that would be another logical reason that she would not be at the convention and playing a major political role. >> and she's got her husband there, front and center, basically playing the role for

her because i think bill clinton seems 2012, this year, not as the campaign, as far as he's concerned, 2016 is the decisive campaign when hillary will be 69 years old. her last chance to run for president and he's already start to go beat those drums for her in 2016. >> you also talked, not in the book, as it happens, subsequent to the publishing of the book and we'll talk about that in the next segment, but you mention that had there was a meeting at the white house, valerie jarrett and hillary clinton, not a direct offer, but just sort of kicking the tires a little bit about the what-if, joe biden stepped aside and her being the vp and the white house vehemently denied there ever was such a conversation. tell us how we can be confident there may have been such a conversation. >> you know, i spoke to someone who spoke to hillary about it. and hillary related to this

source of mine, that this lunch took place, a very pleasant lunch with valley jarrett, who we know is one of the three most important people in the white house after the president and first lady, and though it was a policy lunch, the subject of joe biden came up and although vall valerie didn't offer the job, that's up to the president and the vice-president, and she's certainly indicated she wondered what hillary felt about it and hillary said flatley she had no interest in running on that ticket for the very simple reason, that, one, she'd have to run in 2016 and defend the obama record which i don't think is going to be so great next time if he wins. or if he lost, that she had he' be seen as a loser, she decided it was a lose-lose proposition for her, said no thanks. >> mike: the attack ads have

amateur". there has been speculation it things get really, really tough that the nuclear option might be used to somehow try to attack mitt romney on his faith. i think that would be horrendous, bordering on unamerican. is that something that might be discussed even in the obama circle. i think it's more than discussed. i think they've actually tried to roll out the first part of the campaign. the new york times sunday review has done a piece about races and mormonism and nbc spent an hour about mormonism in prime time. abc has run two segments on mormonism. gq has done a terrible, terrible piece about mormonism and of course, msnbc, as you might expect, as torn into the mormons and-- >> and like to call is--

>> all with one thought in mind, which is you've got 17 million christian evangelical voters and all of whom are basically conservative and republican, and cut that down by 2 or 3%, and makes some christian evangelicals stay at home rather than vote for this mormon, and some swing states. >> mike: i hope that doesn't happen for the sake of the country. you know, to denigrate someone's faith, particularly someone who authentic about it and he's been authentic in the practice of it and i think the testimonies the other night was a person who took it personally and official in his church and big checks, but he gave his life to her people. and if that happens, the potential is the future backfire. >> i think you're right. how ironic that the democratic party.

1960 had a catholic candidate who appeared before a group of christian ministers, protestant ministers, said, listen, i am catholic, but i'm not going to be taking orders from the pope in rome, i'm going to be an american president and he was elected president. and the same party to even consider using religion as a race card, or a card against mitt romney, i think, is really quite disgusting. >> mike: well, i think it would be, ed. [applause] >> and hoping that does not happen. and i want to recommend for those who have not read ed's book "the amateur" i encourage you to do so. it's a very easy read. by that i don't mean that it's shallow, i mean he's written it so the average reader can absorb it and appreciate it, and it's been such a popular book. none of the major networks is willing to have ed on. even though his book was number one on the new york

turning point for me as a young teenager and helped to cause me to be a conservative. which wasn't popular in south arkansas in the 1960's. first of all, thank you for influencing generation after generation toward a conservative and also a godly understanding of our nation's heritage. it's such an honor to have you here. >> thank you, mike, it's an honor to be here and many people told me he they came into the conservative movement reading "a choice not an echo" in 1964. >> and i think you'll get a new generation, if they read "now high power", ang this is an administration that really does have what appears to be a hostility toward expression of traditional christian faith. >> yes, now, that clip that you just showed where obama omitted the word creator, you can't blame that on the teleprompter because he's done it repeatedly.

and he does seem to want to make this a secular country. it will be okay for you to go inside your church and say a prayer after you shut the door, but you can't be out in public and recognize god's influence and many blessings on this country. >> mike: so many people are going to hear us talk like that and say, you j us don't like president obama because you're republicans. let's be specific. tell me some ways in which you think the president has specifically targeted faith? >> well, for example, he issued his thanksgiving address last year, which all presidents do, and i don't know who he was thanking, but it sure wasn't god. and then, in the military, it's very curious, he-- an order was issued to the families that they could not bring a bible in if they come to visit their wounded soldiers. now, really? that couldn't last. and-- >> what damage could a bible do if they brought it into a wounded soldier? >> well, but you'd be on public property and they want

to redefine the first amendment to say you can't be public about it. and so, again and again he has tried to get rid of any reference to god in public life. you know, when he was elected he said he wanted to fundamentally transform the united states. and there's no more fundamental transformation than to get rid of, we all like the pledge of allegiance, the one nation under god, but he doesn't. he wants one nation under the the federal government, especially the executive branch. >> mike: he has lost serious case, one in particular before the supreme court, versus the eeoc describe that case. >> well, that's a very interesting case because this was a luthren school that fired the teacher for reasons of their own. you and i don't need to second guess their reasons and they got her job back the the eeoc

government lawyer to help her so her case got to the supreme court and that's fnot easy, only one case in a hundred to get to the supreme court. and the supreme court was so shocked to hear the government lawyers argue they could tell the luthren school that they had to hire a person, that they slapped them down. >> the supreme court, they can't even agree on the three colors of the flag, much less complicated court case. so, it must be have extraordinarily significant. >> well, that means that obama, he's not to the actual church, but if the church is doing anything to help the community, running a school, running a college, running a hospital, running a charitable endeavor, you've got to submit to the government order. >> mike: these are things that happened in the first four years of the obama administration. if he were to be reelected, what do you think he would try to push for? what are the limits that he

would go for? >> oh, well, i-- patrick henry said i know of no way of judging the future, but by the past and i think it would be the same only more so, because obama fits right into the years of litigation by the aclu, and the atheists to get rid of all the at the point commandments pictures and monuments. to get rid of the crosses erected to honor our veterans, to stop some valedictorians from thanking god in the graduation emergencies or stop little kids from singing christmas carols, that's going on for several years and i think that's why when he appears, his followers chant, you're the one we've been waiting for. he fits priright into that and done it so many times. when he went to speak at georgetown university he demanded that they cover up the monogram of the initials of jesus, he didn't want to

see it while he was there. >> mike: it's amazing to us. the on thing i can hope, this book, no higher power will have the impact on today's generations of america to the same degree that it's a choice not an echo had upon the people of my generation, i was profound and i believe was a major part of preparing for the resurgence of the conservative movement. phyllis, it's a joy to get to visit with you today. >> thank you, mike.
